I've used Graphic Converter for a lifetime. And I use PSElements 3 for extra text effects. But now there's another contender - Pixelmator v1.0. Can the new kid be worthy of hanging out with the boys? Does it have the chops?

THE JUICE

Launch the application and you're presented with an iMovie 6-style set of choices: start Create New Image, Open Existing Image or Start Using Pixelmator.

Pixelmator supports over 100 different file formats. Most importantly, it can open and save .psd files! Their toolbar is great. The tool's icon grows in size when highlighted. The GUI is very clean and easy to use once you learn it. Although, for some, its black color may take some getting used to.

It works great with OS X. It works with iSight, iPhoto and Automaror. It also utilizes Core Images, ColorSync and Spotlight.

THE PULP

Even though it's laid out the same as other mid-priced graphic programs, it still took some extra time to get adjusted to it. Nothing drastic, however. But the learning curve is rather steep. although I do admit that a lot.of their methodology, once learned, is very good.

I also found their Help Viewer to, unfortunately, be of minimal help, as graphically inviting as it looks. You are better off checking the FAQ, trolling the boards or, if necessary, emailing them directly. But the response is very slow. In fact, I never received a response to my email at all.

THE RIND

No effects like bevels, shadows, et al. So it's not quite ready to replace Elements, yet.

SUMMARY

Pixelmator, for all its flaws. is off to a very good start. The quality of its output is equally as well as Element and Graphic Converter. But if you rely on effects, you may want to wait until version 2 before you toss that copy of Elements.
